Teaching Statement

I want to teach a class that I would want to take myself. That means I want to teach a class that can inspire, transform, and enable students, so when they leave my class, they can continue to learn on their own, practice their skills, and make their own discoveries. They will be able to defend their work without resorting to the authority of their teachers or the textbook. In other words, I want them to learn properly.

Diversity Statement

I am a first-generation immigrant. In college, I was one of a few female students in engineering. At work, I was the first foreign employee hired in a white-male dominated financial service company. As a female instructor, I have taught a class of all male students. Although there was a great sense of pride and accomplishment by being a minority, at the same time, I encountered numerous incidents of discrimination and micro-aggressions. One thing I remind myself often is that being the “first” or a minority is a privilege. Generations of activists before me have fought for my rights of education, employment, and pursing a career. There is no reason for me who have enjoyed the fruits of their struggle not to do my part. As an educator, I am committed to using my experience to reach out to marginalized students and help build a more equal and just learning institution.
